In early 2017 I started ingeniousPV with the hopes of better servicing local electrical contractors with their design and permitting needs. Based on my prior industry experience, I wanted to address a problem commonly faced by local solar contractors. In order to save on costs, I found that many contractors usually outsourced their plans to geographically-distant individuals or companies who tend to be unfamiliar with the careful requirements of a contractor’s service area.
These ambitious plan mills, as I call them, tend to overzealously take jobs from any locality in the United States and beyond. For them, it’s all about pushing out high volume. In an effort to drive down their prices, a mill will often outsource their design labor to a distant country, drastically increasing the chances for costly mistakes. What typically results are error-riddled, non-Code-compliant plans that require numerous revisions. What’s more, I found that getting quick follow-up from a plan mill is almost nonexistent, which delays job installation time and puts the installers’ reputation at risk.
When it comes to design and permitting, my philosophy is that serving a smaller coverage area is superior. It allows for greater focus on the particular Code interpretations of the region at-hand, allowing for a more streamlined process. Corollary to that, I believe that working with fewer clients allows one to better manage expectations, deliver a more accurate product, and helps build the foundation needed for an awesome business relationship.
